Most technology curricula begin with a device. This one begins with a pencil and a floor.

The Future Skills Lane runs the full year in three movements. Computational thinking comes first and comes unplugged, because the concepts are about ordering thought and a screen only gets in the way. Then how the digital world actually works, so a machine stops being magic. Only then does artificial intelligence arrive, and by that point a child has the vocabulary to ask it real questions.

The ordinary maths and science of the year sit alongside this lane, but the lane is what makes the strand different from anyone else's.

Computational thinking without a computer

Algorithm, pattern, decomposition, loop, debug, prompt. Taught with bodies, cards, drawings, and instructions given to a very literal parent who follows them exactly and gets it hilariously wrong.

Winter
The digital world

How the machine actually works

Binary, pixel, network, conditional, system. What a picture is made of, where a message goes when it leaves the house, and why a computer does precisely what it was told and nothing else.

Spring
AI literacy proper

What it is, and what it is not

Training data, prompting, verification, bias and fairness, and human and machine working as a team. A child learns that a model has been fed and that what it was fed shows.

The year's concepts pointed at something local and real: a garden, a map, a small tool the family actually wants built.

How Axis approaches AI

A thinking partner you question, never an oracle you obey

The posture is stated plainly in the front matter of every season, because parents deserve to know it before they buy rather than discover it in week nine.

A machine that produces confident sentences is not a machine that knows things. Axis teaches a child to ask it something, verify the answer against a source that is not it, and revise. Three steps, every time, until the habit is older than the temptation to skip it.

And the Menu Rule applies to this strand as it does to every other. A family who wants no AI in their house can run the entire curriculum, skip the Spring movement, and lose nothing structural.

Why this matters more than coding. Most of these children will not write software. All of them will spend their lives beside machines that answer confidently. The skill worth teaching is not syntax. It is the instinct to check.
